Focus Course Details

  • Each course includes why you teach this literacy topic, what concepts and skills share, when you teach them and how you introduce and practice each concept or skill in a creative and effective manner.
  • These are online, asynchronous 30-90-minute courses. You can log on and off multiple times during the allotted time that you have access to your course, allowing you to complete it at your own pace.
  • Once begun, access to each Focus Course is available for seven days - except for Anna’s Movement Focus Course, which is accessible for 1 month to give you ample time to practice these songs and movement activities. Be sure not to start your course before you are ready to begin viewing it.
  • As a prerequisite, we highly recommend watching our free video, Tough, Bough, Cough, Dough, and Through: Meeting the Challenge of Teaching English, which you can watch here. You’ll be glad you did!
  • Each course includes a 10-minute introductory video and an overview video on the Five Phases of Learning to Read. In addition, the Phonics Rules videos include a free video entitled, “What You Need to Know to Teach Phonics Rules”
  • The costs of our Focus Courses range from $30-$60.
  • Click here to register for a specific course or more. You will see the all the courses that are possible to take on that page. Registration is open year-round.

Our courses are based on literacy phases. We give suggested grade-level equivalencies, when applicable. There are three courses, which have pertinent information and activities for all three grades:

The Focus Course Menus below are in grade-level lists. If you are a 2nd or 3rd grade teacher, new to our literacy approach, we recommend that you view the Roadmap to Literacy’s Five Phases of Learning to Read Chart (found in our Grade 1 Language Arts Planning folder on this website) to figure out which phase most of your students are in. Once your class’s phase is identified you can then choose the appropriate courses. We strongly advocate for teachers to teach to the level of student skill rather than by grade level.
