Throughout our many years as Waldorf teachers, we have each grown professionally and personally from our commitment to a path of self-development. This path has included the continual mentoring provided by our schools and the knowledge we gained from the regular evaluations we have received from colleagues in the Waldorf movement.
These outside evaluators provided us with important guidance upon which to base our professional development. Their astute observations also helped us gauge the type of mentoring we needed at that time.
We are hopeful that one of us can do the same for you, as part of your ongoing self-evaluation process.
We recommend a two-day teacher evaluation visit for experienced teachers and a three-day evaluation for new teachers, especially 1st grade teachers. Teacher evaluations usually follow this pattern:
We ask to meet with you (the teacher being evaluated) either the day before or the morning of the first day of the evaluation so that you can share with us the specific areas of growth you have been working on and would like us to especially notice. We will also ask for your block rotation, student objectives, lesson plan, seating chart, etc. so that we can be as ready as possible for our first observation.
We observe two (or three) consecutive main lessons, at least one practice period in Language Skills and/or Math that you teach, and one subject class (Music, Spanish, Eurythmy, etc.) with another teacher with their permission.
When not in the classroom observing, we will need a quiet space to review your students’ main lesson books, rough drafts, paintings, etc., as well as, your lesson plans, student assessments, your self-evaluation, and to prepare our observation notes for our daily meeting.
On our first observation day, we meet with you during at least one period to discuss the lessons we observed, your self-evaluation, ask clarifying questions, and share some observations regarding your students’ work. On the second day, we have a meeting with you and your in-house mentor (and/or any other school representative) to share our observations, commendations, and recommendations. This meeting will be 60-90 minutes long.
Note to school representative: If our meeting is not scheduled after school, it will be essential to arrange for adequate substitute coverage, so the teacher has time to speak with us without feeling any pressure.
We send an official report within two weeks of our visit to a designated school representative, who will send it to you. This report will closely reflect the content of the meeting we had with you and your mentor.
We have also provided evaluations for Waldorf school business administrators, development directors, school mentors, and faculty (pedagogical) administrators. These evaluations include:
Please submit a request form for our evaluation fees. If your school is out of our immediate vicinity, we can also arrange to discuss travel expenses and our criteria for food and lodging during our stay. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
Please read our biographies in the About Us section of our website. Over the years, we have supported schools and teacher training programs all over the globe. Let us know if you would like the name and contact information of folks who can share their impressions of our work with them.
We are so looking forward to talking with you on how one of us might best serve your school. It would be an honor.
Blessings on your work,
Anna, Tim, and Patti
