Like Janet, Tim and I became involved with Waldorf when searching for the best education for our daughter, Emi. Since there was not a Waldorf school in our area of the California foothills, we chose to homeschool her. Soon after, with friends who were interested in Waldorf education, we created the Mandala Homeschool Cooperative. The cooperative turned into the Cedar Springs Waldorf School (CSWS) in 1989 with the huge support of Nancy Poer, Waldorf teacher and mentor. Our son, Zach, was in CSWS’s 2nd graduating class.
After completing my Waldorf Teacher Training at Rudolf Steiner College in 1992, I joined the burgeoning CSWS faculty, taking my first class from 1st - 8th grade. Though I had my certificate and my Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from the state of California in my pocket, I quickly learned that collaboration with other teachers along with having wise mentors to support me was the secret to becoming a thriving, effective, and happy educator!
Over the past 30+ years, I have served as a class teacher (grades and kindergarten), student support teacher, pedagogical administrator/education director, evaluator, mentor, and adult educator in independent and charter Waldorf schools here in the U.S. and abroad. I have also lead summer curriculum workshops at schools and anthroposophical training centers. In May 2024 I completed a stint of grades teaching with a delightful class from grades 1-4 at the Waldorf School of the Roaring Fork in Colorado.
In 2014 I began collaborating with Janet on a series of projects focused on our passion for teaching language arts in the lower grades. Over the past six years, we have developed live and online programs that offer a creative, comprehensive, and effective language arts curriculum for grades 1-3. Besides teaching literacy workshops to teachers, I continue to mentor and evaluate teachers, along with offering parent education for Waldorf schools. I am also excited to offer literacy coaching as well as the above supports!
